Tooth Fillings Q&A

Why would I need a tooth filling?

A tooth filling offers repair for teeth that have surface damage due to decay, fracture, or wear. The filling helps strengthen the tooth. Fillings are an early intervention that can prevent decay from setting in or worsening and spreading, leading to more extensive dental problems.

How long do tooth fillings last?

A tooth filling lasts between five and 10 years. The longevity of your filling also depends on how you care for the filling and the type of material used for the filling.

What types of material are used for a tooth filling?

The type of material used for your filling depends on your cosmetic preferences and the location of the restoration. At Esthetic Partners Dental Group, your provider may recommend:

Composite

Composite fillings are tooth-colored and made of a strong plastic material that blends with the natural color of teeth. They’re often placed in teeth that are most visible, near the front of your mouth. These fillings can last 5-7 years with proper care and brushing.

Amalgam (Silver Filling)

Amalgam is made of a mixture of metals. It can last 7-12 years with proper care and brushing. These fillings are silver and usually placed in the back molars.
What is the process of getting a tooth filling?

Once you’re relaxed in the dental chair, a local anesthetic is applied to numb the affected tooth and surrounding soft tissue. Your provider uses a hand-held instrument to prepare your tooth by removing the decayed or damaged tooth surface. Any bacteria and debris are also removed.

The dentist then applies dental adhesives to make sure the filling material (composite or amalgam) is securely locked into the tooth.

A selected filling material (composite or amalgam) is applied, shaped, and polished. Your provider checks your bite to make sure it feels natural and comfortable.  If the filling is deep and close to the pulp of the tooth, your provider applies a medicated layer called Dycal or Theracal to protect and help the pulp heal.
