Dentures Q&A

What are dentures?

Dentures are custom-crafted oral prosthetics that replace your permanent teeth. They’re made of durable, long-lasting materials like acrylic, metal, or nylon, and allow you to bite, chew, and speak confidently.

Dentures provide an added benefit of optimal oral health. By replacing missing teeth, you can lower the risk of more serious issues like gum recession, bone loss, and periodontal disease.

What are the types of dentures?

The team at Esthetic Partners Dental Group offers several types of dentures, including:

Full dentures

Full dentures replace an entire arch of permanent teeth (upper or lower). They have a metal base plate, pink plastic gums, and a row of artificial teeth. Before putting full dentures in your mouth, you apply an adhesive to the bottom. The adhesive prevents your dentures from moving around.

Partial dentures

If you’re only missing a few teeth, consider partial dentures. Partial dentures attach to metal clasps bonded to your remaining teeth. A number of artificial teeth fill the gaps in your smile, improving your ability to bite and chew.

Denture alternatives

If you want a more permanent tooth replacement solution, the team might recommend a dental bridge or dental implants. Both of these restorative options replace missing teeth, but you don’t remove them. Dental bridges are held in place with crowns, while dental implants fuse with your jaw.

What does getting dentures involve?

At Esthetic Partners Dental Group, getting dentures takes two appointments:

First appointment

At your first appointment, the team conducts an oral exam and takes a series of oral X-rays. If you have cavities or gum disease, your provider might recommend extractions or periodontal treatment before moving forward.

If everything appears healthy, the team takes digital impressions of your remaining teeth (if you have any) and gums. They send your impressions to a dental laboratory that uses them to design and manufacture a custom set of dentures that fit your mouth perfectly.

Second appointment

When the laboratory completes your dentures, two or three weeks later, you return to the nearest office to try them on. Your provider makes adjustments as necessary and provides care instructions.

How do I care for my dentures?

Caring for your dentures is similar to caring for your permanent teeth. The team recommends brushing them with a soft-bristle toothbrush at least two times a day and rinsing them in cool tap water after eating snacks or a meal. At night, take your dentures out and soak them in an FDA-approved cleaning solution.
