Cleaning Q&A

What is a dental cleaning?

A dental cleaning is a preventive measure that removes plaque and tartar from between your teeth and beneath your gums. By eliminating harmful bacteria and food particles from these hard-to-reach areas, it’s possible to lower the risk of gum disease, cavities, and persistent bad breath.

What are the types of dental cleaning?

The team at Esthetic Partners Dental Group offers several types of dental cleaning, including:

Traditional teeth cleaning

During a traditional cleaning, your provider uses a handheld tool called a scaler to remove tartar and bacteria from your teeth. The process typically takes between 45 minutes to an hour and requires no anesthesia or recovery period.

Full mouth debridement

If the team notices the buildup of heavy tartar around your teeth, but your gums appear healthy, they might recommend full mouth debridement. Using special tools, your provider eliminates the buildup, restoring your smile to a healthy condition.

Scaling and root planing

If you have mild or moderate gum disease, the team conducts a deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing. Before a deep cleaning, your provider administers a local anesthetic. Then, they carefully remove plaque and tartar from beneath your gums. After removing the tartar, they smooth out the tooth roots, allowing your gums to reattach to your teeth.

Antibiotic irrigation

If you have receding gums due to gum disease, the team might recommend antibiotic irrigation. During this type of cleaning, your provider injects antibiotic drugs into your gum tissue. The medication eliminates harmful bacteria, preventing the risk of loose teeth and bone loss.

Osseous surgery pocket reduction

If your gum pockets are too deep to respond to scaling and root planing, surgical intervention may be necessary. During this type of cleaning, your provider administers a local anesthetic and pulls your gums away from your teeth. They thoroughly clean the area beneath your gums and remove any harmful bacteria. Then, your provider sutures your gums back into place.

What type of cleaning will most benefit me?

To determine the type of cleaning that will most benefit you, Esthetic Partners Dental Group conducts an oral exam and takes a series of oral X-rays. After assessing the condition of your gums, they develop a treatment plan that aligns with your needs.
