Orthodontics Q&A

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics are treatments and procedures that correct malocclusions, the official term for problems with your bite. Orthodontic treatments include braces, Invisalign®, and other devices that apply a constant force to gently move your teeth into more aligned positions.

Orthodontic treatments work because your teeth are held in place by the periodontal ligament. This hammock-like structure isn’t fixed, like bone, and can be coaxed into new positions when force is placed on the teeth.

Who needs orthodontics?

Orthodontics help straighten out crooked teeth, fill in gaps, and improve the look of your bite, no matter your age. Orthodontics also improves your facial harmony by adjusting the way your lower face looks. Adults and children benefit.

Cosmetic changes are important, but aren’t the only reason you’d seek orthodontic care. When your teeth are properly aligned, they work better. You chew better and speak more clearly.

You’ll also find that dental hygiene is easier when you have straighter, more aligned teeth. This reduces your risk of developing infections or gum disease.

If you have existing gum disease, your provider will treat it before starting your orthodontic treatment. You do need to keep your gum disease managed during orthodonture.

What smile problems can orthodontics address?

If you have concerns about the look of your teeth or their function, orthodontic treatments can help. These are just some of the most common issues corrected with orthodontic treatments like braces, clear aligners, or other appliances.

An orthodontic patient may have more than one of these issues, but a customized orthodontic plan can address them all:

  • Tooth crowding
  • Large gaps between teeth
  • Underbite, when the lower teeth push forward
  • Open bite, when the teeth don’t close
  • Overjet, when the front teeth protrude forward
  • Crossbite, when the lower teeth are behind the upper teeth

The team at  Esthetic Partners Dental Group also helps children who have bite issues following a cleft palate. The deformity may have been repaired very early on, but it still affects how the teeth develop.
